Description
The Carnell chest tomb, located approximately 3.5 metres north of the organ loft of the Church of St Mary, is a chest tomb dated 1799 in memory of Elizabeth Carnell. It is made of grey limestone and features fluted corner-shafts with moulded capitals and bases. Each of the four sides has a single rectangular fielded panel with concave corners and sunbursts. The flat lid has moulded edges, a moulded base, and a two-step plinth. The northern panel is inscribed, with the opening words in Gothic lettering and the remainder in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, recording the death of Elizabeth Carnell in 1799. This panel also notes the deaths of her husband William in 1836 and his second wife Sarah in 1848. The bottom step of the plinth has sockets from former iron area railings.
