Description
The Carnel chest tomb, located approximately 2 metres north of the organ loft of the Church of St Mary, is likely from the 17th century and commemorates members of the Carnel family. It is made of sandstone ashlar and features a plain rectangular shape with a very thick, soffit-moulded flat lid and a moulded base resting on a one-step plinth. The top of the lid is significantly weathered, and any inscription has eroded away. On the south side, three stone blocks are inscribed with Roman serif capitals. The top left block commemorates Constance Carnel, who died in 1714, while the adjacent block records the death of Thomas Carnel in 1718. The bottom left stone is worn, but the date 1717 is still partially legible.
