Description

The Bank Street Schools, originally constructed in the 18th century, served as the local workhouse until 1836. The original building was two storeys high, constructed of red brick with grey headers, and featured nine windows and stringcourses above the ground floor. In the 19th century, a third storey was added, faced with tiles and incorporating a central gable with scalloped bargeboards. This third storey also includes three smaller gables above the outer windows on each side. 19th-century casement windows are found throughout, with those on the ground floor having cambered head linings. A large, modern window is positioned centrally on the top floor, beneath the main gable. Square-headed doorways, dated to the 19th-century alterations, are located at each end and are topped with dripstones.
