Description
No. 139 High Street is a former bank, now used as offices, built around 1860 in the Italianate style. It was originally a branch of the London and County Bank. The building is constructed of red brick in English bond, with Bath stone dressings, and features a roof that is concealed by a parapet. It has two tall brick chimneystacks and stands three storeys high with a basement, featuring four windows.
The large and elaborate stone cornice is adorned with brackets and square floral motifs. On the second floor, there are four round-headed arched windows with moulded architraves and horns. The first floor contains four segmental-headed sash windows, each with cornices above and aprons below, supported by console brackets and vermiculated friezes. The fascia displays the lettering "London & County Bank," which is nearly worn away, alongside two blank panels.
The ground floor features four round-headed arches supported by half columns with composite capitals. The keystones above these arches depict bearded figures and are topped by a floral cornice. There are two central round-headed windows, and at each end of the ground floor, there are six fielded panelled doors with decorative iron grilles above. Below the central windows, iron spikes and cambered openings lead to the basement.
