Description

Went House is a house built around 1710, with a late 18th-century L-wing. It features an exceptionally fine Queen Anne front, constructed of brown brick with red brick dressings, and has a steeply pitched tiled roof on the front range and a slate roof on the wing. The house has four tall red brick chimneystacks and is two storeys high with attics. The front has five windows, with two additional window spaces in the end projection, and four windows on the left side elevation. The front is adorned with stone coping and a panelled parapet, along with a moulded terracotta eaves cornice. It has five cambered 12-pane sashes with jalousies and central brick keystones, as well as recessed rectangular brick panels and a deep plinth.

The central doorcase features a cornice, reeded pilasters, a rectangular fanlight, panelled reveals, and 8-panelled double doors. The left side elevation includes one narrow 8-pane sash, two 12-pane cambered sashes, and on the ground floor, there are two 3-light mullioned and transomed windows. To the left, there is a projecting bay with diaper brickwork, which has a cambered 16-pane sash on the first floor and a cambered 6-pane sash with horns on the ground floor. An external brick chimneystack shows tumbling in, and there is a ragstone extension at the rear.

Inside, the house features a fine main staircase from around 1710, which has three turned balusters and scrolled tread ends, along with a panelled hall that includes a dado rail. The right side ground floor room has dado panelling and an 18th-century fireplace with an eaved architrave, swags, and a panel carved with a basket of fruit. There is also a subsidiary winder staircase with turned balusters.
