Description
Abbey Brewery Cottage is a late 16th or early 17th century lobby entrance house, substantially altered and extended in the early 19th century. It is a timber-framed building, now refronted in red brick with blue headers, featuring a tiled roof that is half-hipped to the right. A tall brick chimneystack rises centrally, and another is located at the right end of the building. The rear elevation displays exposed timber framing on the first floor.
The cottage has two storeys and four windows, featuring leaded light casements. It has a modillion eaves cornice, a brick string course, and a plinth that is partly brick and partly stone. A door is located on the left side, set before a large chimneystack, with a cambered architrave, reeded pilasters and six flush panels, the upper two of which are glazed. The right-side door has reeded pilasters, a wooden cornice, and a mid-19th century door with marginal glazing to the upper part. A further casement window with old leaded lights is found on the right side elevation, in the attic.
The interior contains an open fireplace, a winder staircase, an 18th century two-panelled door, and a three-plank door leading to the attic. One end room contains a beam with a 2-inch chamfer, the central room has two 18th century axial beams, and the right-hand beam has an early 19th century fire surround. The attic boasts old floorboards and a staggered purlin roof without a ridgepiece.
