Description
Chestnuts is a house that was formerly two cottages, likely built in the 16th century and restored in the 20th century. It is a timber-framed building, with the left side featuring close-studding on a ragstone plinth and a tiled roof. The gable end has a four-light mullioned window, while the first floor has two two-light mullioned windows, and the ground floor features a large window flanked by two smaller mullioned windows. The right side is also close-studded and has two two-storey gabled bays. There are two brick chimneystacks, including an external one on the right side, and a rear wing added in the 1930s.
Inside, the dining room includes a chamfered axial beam with a lamb's tongue stop, and there is an open fireplace with a chamfered beam and 16th-century brickwork. The service end has another open fireplace and three-plank doors. The first floor features jowled posts and some original mullioned windows. The roof has queen posts with through purlins and a collar beam, along with some curved braces, but no ridgepiece. There is also a butler's pantry from the 1930s.
