Description
Fort Cottages are a pair of cottages, likely originally built as coastguard cottages, constructed after 1824 and depicted on the 1838 map of Broadstairs. The cottages are rendered and feature gable ends with kneelers. The roof is now covered in 20th-century concrete plain tiles, and there are one central and two end brick chimneystacks. The buildings are two storeys high.
On the east side, there are windows that alternate between cambered sashes and sliding sashes, along with pedimented doorcases. The west elevation has eight cambered sashes and pedimented doorcases. The layout is quite unusual, as there were originally eight separate dwelling units accessed by four doors leading to a lobby. This lobby provides access to two distinct "front" doors, one leading to a downstairs unit and the other to a staircase that leads to an upstairs unit. Inside, there are internal ledged doors to the lobby featuring handmade strap hinges, along with original fireplaces and plank panelling.
