Description
The Royal Albion Hotel (No 2) and The Dugout Public House (No 4) are 19th century corner buildings located on Fort Hill. No 2 is a four-storey structure with a basement and attic, constructed of painted brick and topped with a slate roof featuring three round-headed dormers, along with two round-headed and one simple dormer on the King Street elevation. It has three sash windows on the first and second floors set within arcading, and five sash windows on the King Street side. The building also features a 19th century bar front.
No 4, which is mid-19th century, is also four storeys with a basement and attic, finished in stucco and covered by a slate roof with two dormers. It has three sash windows with intact glazing bars set in Italianate architraves, and a three-light curved bow window on the first floor. This building also has a 19th century bar front. Notably, No 4 has a basement that extends under the Classic Theatre and includes No 4 Mansion Street, reputed to be the largest underground public house in Kent.
Nos 2 to 6 (even) are recognized as a group.
