Description

Numbers 12B and 14 on King Street in Margate are originally one house from the early to mid 17th century, now subdivided. The building was refronted in the early 19th century and altered in the later 20th century. It features a flint-faced exterior with red brick quoins and dressings that have been painted. The structure has a parapet and is two stories tall with two windows. It was likely originally a two-bay end chimneystack house with curved gables, with the outline of one gable still faintly visible on the side wall of number 16. Number 12B retains an early 19th-century 12-pane sash window on the first floor, while number 14 has a 20th-century replacement 12-pane sash. The later 19th-century shopfronts were replaced in the later 20th century, featuring flint work, 12-pane sashes, and paired wooden doorcases with brackets and half-glazed doors. The rear wall has mostly been replaced, except for some early 19th-century framing of thin scantling in number 12B.

Inside number 12B, there is a spine beam with a lambs tongue stop and ovolo moulding, along with early 19th-century floor joists that are reeded on the front and central and end beams. There is also an early 19th-century winder staircase and some old floorboards. The first floor features a moulded spine beam and an early 19th-century cambered brick opening to the chimney, which is a replacement from the same period. Number 14 has similar 17th-century beams, but the ground floor spine beam has been replaced. This building is one of a small number of houses in Margate that predate the town's development as a seaside resort after the mid-18th century.
