Description
The High House is an unusual timber-framed building located on the west side of High Street in Milton Regis. It dates from the early 19th century and stands three storeys tall beneath a steeply pitched tiled roof. The ground floor features a modern shop front alongside an early 19th-century doorcase, which includes thin pilasters, a projecting cornice, and a rectangular tympanum.
The first floor overhangs on a moulded bressumer supported by carved brackets, with decorative square timber-work between them. The right side of this floor has a continuous window made up of two tiers of ten lights, featuring wooden mullions and a transom, while the left side is plastered and has one sash window with missing glazing bars. Above the first floor, there is a moulded cornice.
The second floor mirrors the first on the left side, with a window that also has missing glazing bars. The right side features ornamental squares of timber-work and an oriel window consisting of two tiers of five lights, which projects on three carved brackets. Flanking this oriel window are two small fixed windows, each with two lights.
The High House is part of a group of buildings that includes No 65 and the adjoining building to the southwest, as well as Nos 67 to 71 (odd), 71A, 73, 73A, 75 to 87 (odd), 87A, 89 to 95 (odd), 95A, 97, 97A, 99, and 99A.
