Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church dating from the 13th century, with restoration work completed in 1904. It is constructed of flint and sandstone and features a plain tiled roof. The church includes a chancel with a south chapel, a nave with aisles, and a north tower. The exterior has been heavily restored, with the tower topped by a weather vane dated 1904, above a wooden belfry with a tiled roof. The east window is a three-light window from the 15th century, while the other windows are from the 19th century. The west doorway is double chamfered.

Inside, the nave has arcades of two bays supported by square piers with chamfered corners, leading to heavy moulded abaci and trefoiled archlets. The roof features three tall crown posts. There is a single chamfered arch on imposts leading from the chancel to the chapel, with a blocked arch to a demolished north chapel, and a double chamfered chancel arch. Notable fittings include a trefoil-headed piscina in the chancel and a 15th-century rood screen with five bays, each featuring four-light traceried openings and crenellated oblique transoms. Above the blank tracery on the lower panels is a vine motif frieze, with angels, eagles, and roses in the spandrels. Attached shafts support a frieze of Tudor flowers with a renewed cove. The font, dating from the 13th century, stands on five shafts and has four blank arches on each side of the bowl. A royal coat of arms, which was obscured at the time of the survey, is carved in high relief on the south wall of the nave.
