Description
The gateway and wall enclosing the gardens of Nos 9 to 12 Stephens Close, located on Old Gate Road in Davington, were originally part of the garden for Davington Court. The wall is made of red brick and previously enclosed the garden, but the north-west end has been demolished. An archway dated 1624 is situated towards the northern end of the wall. This arch is obtusely pointed with chamfered jambs and is flanked by obelisk-shaped pilasters, featuring a dripstone, cornice, and a truncated pediment above. The upper sections of the pilasters are made of red brick, while the arch and lower parts of the pilasters are covered with a thin layer of cement. There is also a simpler gateway in the wall enclosing the garden to No 9, which has a similarly shaped stone arch and a truncated brick pediment above it. Additionally, part of the original wall remains in the north-east corner of the garden to No 9, which includes a fine round-headed moulded stone gateway incorporated within it.
