Description

This building, known as No 58 on High Street, is part of a row with Nos 60 and 62 and was originally the front of the Red Lion Inn, which was the main hotel in Sittingbourne until it was replaced by the Rose Inn. The front of the building dates from the 18th century and features two storeys and attics, constructed of red brick with a tiled roof and a 19th-century gabled dormer. It has a cornice and a panelled parapet topped with a plaster figure of a reclining lion. There are four sash windows, although the glazing bars are missing. The ground floor has a modern public house front and includes a carriage arch leading to the west.

At the back of the street front, there is a long, low timber-framed building that is positioned at right angles to it. The ground floor of this section has been rebuilt in painted brick, while the first floor is plastered and overhangs on a bressumer. It also has a tiled roof and sash windows, some of which still have intact glazing bars. Notably, there is a curved bay with three round-headed windows at the south end of the ground floor, topped with a cornice. The building has two storeys and six windows facing west. This site has hosted an inn for 500 years, and in 1415, Henry V was entertained here upon his return from the Battle of Agincourt. Other notable guests have included Cardinal Wolsey and Henry V. Nos 30 to 62 form a group.
