Description

The barn and adjoining cattle shed, located immediately north of Kings Hill Farmhouse, date from the late 18th century. The structure features a softwood timber frame that has been reclad in new weather-boards, resting on a low plinth made of stone rubble topped with English bond brick. The roof is slate, half-hipped, and adorned with black glazed ridge tiles.

The barn is designed with a 5-bay aisled layout, featuring opposed entrances that lead to a threshing floor in the wider central bay. At the southeast corner, there is a single-storey, 11-bay cattle shed that adjoins the barn at right angles.

On both the north and south sides of the barn, the wagon entrances are highlighted by hipped midstrey canopies supported by straight braces. The south entrance is blocked but includes small doorways on either side. The cattle shed, located to the southeast of the barn's south front, has an open front supported by chamfered wooden posts on stone bases, with short curved braces connecting to the arcade plates. Its roof is slate, with the gable end boarded in, and the back wall is constructed of stone rubble and some flint, with the top courses in Flemish bond brick.

Inside, the barn features vertically studded walls with midrails and straight braces. The aisle-posts and arcade posts have jowled heads with hollow chamfers, and there are straight braces connecting the arcade posts to the arcade plates and tie-beams. Above, queen posts and collars are present, along with diagonally set clasped purlins and intermediate collars. The principal and common rafters remain intact, with no ridge-piece or ridgeboard. Diagonal struts are found above the aisle ties. The cattle shed contains 19th-century machine-sawn tie-beam trusses with queen struts and a boarded soffit.
