Description
The Church of St John the Evangelist, built in 1881 by Kirk and Son of Sleaford, is designed in the Early English style. It was funded by Mrs Hall of Syndale House, Faversham, who was the widow of a gunpowder manufacturer in the area. The church is constructed of knapped flint with Bath stone dressings and has tiled roofs. It features a nave with five bays and a west entrance, a lower chancel with three bays, and a south-east aisle. The windows are lancet style set in deep embrasures, with the west front displaying an oculus with a quatrefoil, a triple lancet, and an arched doorcase with colonnettes. The aisle has a double lancet window, while all other windows are double lancets, except for the tall triple lancet east window in the chancel. The windows are separated by angle buttresses, and the roofs have cross-shaped saddlestones. Inside, there is an arcade supported by circular columns, a barrel-vaulted roof, an octagonal stone font, original pews, and an octagonal wooden pulpit. The stained glass was created by Frederick Prosed.
