Description

44 West Street is an early 19th-century front applied to a probable 17th-century timber-framed building. A low, steeply pitched tiled roof covers the building, which extends into a north-south wing behind. The east side is roughcast, while the north side features mathematical tiles. The building is three storeys high and has two bays. A moulded eaves cornice runs along the top. Sash windows, three panes wide, are found on both the first and second floors, set in reeded frames and ornamented with roundels in the corners. Painted brick voussoirs are positioned above the first-floor windows. The front displays a public house design, featuring a frieze and projecting cornice on the ground floor. A four-light window is flanked by doorways on either side. The doorway on the right has a reeded frame with corner roundels, leading to a six-panelled door set within flush reveals and topped by a small, rectangular fanlight. An advertisement is displayed between the first and second floors.
