Description
23 Court Street is a building that dates from the 18th century but has a front that belongs to a 16th or 17th century house. It has two storeys and an attic, featuring five windows and two dormers. The exterior is made of painted brick, with a string course and a steeply pitched tiled roof. The two southernmost window bays project slightly. The first-floor windows have cambered head linings and retain their glazing bars. There are two modern shop fronts, and between them is a 17th-century doorway made of Kentish rag stone, which is older than the facade. This pointed doorway has a tooth-shaped keystone and carved spandrels, set within a moulded architrave surround that likely dates from the 18th century. Above the doorway is a 10-panel moulded door with a pointed moulded tympanum. It is said that this building was the residence of Captain John Trowts, who was the mayor of Faversham in 1660 and hosted King Charles II here, as they had shared exile in Breda. The buildings numbered 17 to 25 Court Street form a group with this property.
