Description

Castle Close, also known as The Courtyard, is a former kitchen wing that was later converted into flats and a restaurant. It dates from the late 17th century. The north front is constructed of red brick with grey headers and features a tiled roof, while the south front has painted brick on the ground floor and is weatherboarded on the first floor, topped with a slate roof. There is one brick and one stone chimneystack.

The building is two storeys high. The north front has five windows; the outer windows on the first floor are lunettes, while the others are tripartite sashes with 15 glazing bars. The ground floor windows are tripartite with 24 glazing bars and cambered heads, and there is a brick stringcourse. A double door is located in the penultimate bay from the right, with an additional entrance to the left framed by early 19th-century imported columns.

The south front features four 20th-century casements on the first floor and one on the ground floor, along with a gabled weatherboarded hoist in the roofspace. The ground floor has a doorcase to the left with a four-panelled door, and French windows to the right, which are adorned with a cornice and fluted columns. Inside, there is an open fireplace with a wooden bressumer. Originally, this structure served as a detached kitchen wing for Chiddingstone Castle, with a granary located above.
