Description

The Montreal Park Obelisk, located in the garden of number 81, is a commemorative structure erected around 1764 by General Amherst and his two brothers. It honors their contributions to the North American campaigns that resulted in British control over Canada following the defeat of the French in Montreal. The obelisk is made of Kentish ragstone and features a plinth with a cornice and incised marble panels that detail General Amherst's military victories.

The inscriptions on the four panels commemorate significant events, including the surrender of Fort Levi on August 25, 1760, the abandonment of Isle of Noix on August 28, 1760, and the surrender of Montreal along with the capitulation of ten French battalions on September 8, 1760. Other victories noted include the recapture of St. John's, Newfoundland on September 18, 1762, the surrender of Louisburg on July 26, 1758, the capture of Fort du Quesne on November 24, 1758, the surrender of Niagara on July 25, 1759, the possession of Crown Point on August 4, 1759, and the capitulation of Quebec on September 18, 1759.

Additionally, the obelisk commemorates the reunion of the three brothers on their paternal ground on January 25, 1764, after six years of successful military service in various climates and conditions. The main house, known as Montreal, is no longer standing.
