Description
Dunstall Priory is a small mansion built around 1810 by architect Lugar, who was a contemporary of John Nash. The design is similar to several houses by Nash, such as Cronkhill near Shrewsbury and Sandridge in Devon. Dunstall Priory exemplifies the Rural Palladian style, featuring a simple classical shape with varied planning and a picturesque silhouette. The main highlight of the house is a round tower topped with a conical slate roof, alongside an irregular-shaped two-storey main structure. The elevations are finished in stucco with incised lines that mimic stone courses, and the building has projecting eaves with a plastered soffit and a Welsh slate roof. It includes round-headed sash windows and French casements on the ground floor, complemented by a canopied verandah. The interior features an interesting plan with a Regency bowed room located at the base of the tower. Dunstall Priory was once the residence of the late Lord Dunsany.
