Description
The Church of Saint Edmund, located on Fawkham Road in West Kingsdown, is a Grade I listed building with origins in the Saxon, Norman, and 14th century. The structure features a chancel and nave that are connected without a chancel arch, a square tower situated at the south-west corner of the chancel, a south porch, and a vestry at the north-west corner of the nave. It is constructed of flint laid in fairly regular courses and has a tiled roof. The nave and square tower are of Saxo-Norman design, while the chancel may also be from this period, though its windows are decorated. Inside, the church contains wall paintings from the second half of the 12th century, depicting the Sacrifice of Cain and Abel and the scene of Cain killing Abel. There is also some 14th-century stained glass in the nave, including north and south windows.
