Description
This is a building of shops and houses dating back to the 16th century, although it has a largely 19th-century appearance. The building spans numbers 31 to 37 (odd) on High Street and stands at the corner of Six Bells Lane. It is a two-story structure rendered in stucco. The facade is characterized by large gables on the right and left sides, with two smaller gables centrally positioned. The gables are ornamented with 19th-century bargeboards. The roof is tiled, with the ridge extending downwards as a pentice roof to the rear, incorporating three tiers of small tiled dormers. The first floor has an overhanging design. The ground floor is occupied by shop fronts. Number 35 has a plain boarded door and a sash window to the right with panelled shutters. Four widely spaced 19th-century sash windows are present on the first floor, each adorned with moulded ornamental square stucco drip stones. The first floor is divided into four panels by vertical ornamental projecting boarding. Triangular recessed panels feature in the gables on the right and left sides. An eaves and gutter run between the gables. The building has a tall central ridge stack, along with smaller stacks to the right and left. The side elevation displays a painted weather-boarded gable end on the first floor. Numbers 31 to 37 (odd) are considered to form a group with nearby properties.
