Description

Stone House is a house dating from the mid to late 15th century, with an early 16th-century cross-wing and later alterations. It is timber-framed, featuring some areas with plaster infilling and others that are rendered. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The building consists of a hall and a cross-wing. The right section is rendered, with one storey and an attic in the center, and two storeys at the right end. The right end has a half-hipped roof with a gablet. There is a projecting stack at the right gable end and another stack on the front slope of the roof towards the left end. The fenestration is irregular, featuring three three-light casements; one larger than the others with leaded lights off-centre to the left, and two smaller ones towards the right end. There is a single-light window in the right gable end to the left of the stack and a two-light casement to the right on the first floor. A 20th-century rear dormer is present in the central section.

The cross-wing at the left end has two storeys and is now on a high plinth. It is close-studded with plaster infilling and has a bracketed jetty. The roof is hipped with a gablet, and there is a projecting stack on the right side elevation. Each floor has one three-light leaded casement. The door at the right end features a 4-centred arched head with hollow spandrels. There are later single-storey lean-tos at either end.

Inside, the house has a moulded crown post, exposed beams and posts, moulded service doors in situ, and a large fireplace from the late 16th or early 17th century on the ground floor. This fireplace backs onto the passage and is built with large ashlared blocks of dressed stone, featuring a moulded fireplace surround.
