Description
This former oasthouse, located about 20 metres south-south-east of The Wool House and Wool House Cottage, dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and was altered in the 1920s. It is constructed from small blocks of coursed galleted stone with tooled stone dressings and features a corrugated iron roof. The building is a rectangular stowage or barn oast, approximately 70 feet long and 30 feet wide, and is partly built into the side of a hill. It has three storeys, with the ground floor partly underground at the south-east end. The roof is mono-pitched.
The exterior includes long-and-short tooled stone quoins and an irregular arrangement of windows. There are three evenly spaced latticed 6-light mullioned and transomed windows on the second floor. The north-west end features former loading doorways for each floor, now with latticed lights, separated only by stone lintels. A small 3-light wooden diamond mullion window is located on the right end of the ground floor.
Inside, most of the ground floor appears to be occupied by enclosed stone hearths. The building previously had two additional weatherboarded storeys and was part of a larger complex of similar structures. It is included for its group value.
