Description

Barn. Dating from the 16th century, with later alterations, the barn is timber framed. The front (east) has a 19th-century lean-to constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern. The rear elevation displays exposed posts with brick infilling below a central rail, and weatherboarding above. The left gable end is brick in Flemish bond below a rail, with exposed framing, an arch-braced tie-beam, and brick infilling above. The roof is covered with plain tiles, hipped at the ridge. The barn comprises four timber-framed bays, featuring a midstrey – a small internal chamber – within the second bay from the right. Inside, there are gunstock-jowled posts and arch-braced tie-beams. The roof structure is a common rafter design, with lapped collars and, added later, raked queen posts supporting the side purlins below the collars. The infilling above the midrail on the front is daub. Tension braces are visible on the right gable end. A porch extends from the lean-to at the front, featuring boarded sides, a hipped plain tile roof, and boarded double doors. A set of low double doors is located at the rear. A 19th-century lean-to extends along the road frontage.
