Description

A row of six cottages, originally incorporating a shop at the right end, was built in 1827. The cottages are constructed from evenly-coursed stone blocks, with the ground floor rendered. They have a slate roof. The building occupies a corner site, facing onto Bottlescrew Hill.

The cottages are two storeys and a garret, with a cellar to the right end. They have a gabled form, featuring a central stone ridge stack and two further stone stacks evenly spaced towards the gable ends. The front elevation has a regular arrangement of six windows, each a small, deeply-recessed 12-pane sash. There are six doorways set between the windows; these are half-glazed to the left end (No. 11), boarded at No. 9, half-glazed to the left of centre (No. 7), boarded at No. 5 and half-glazed to the right of centre (No. 3), and half-glazed to the right end (No. 1). A slate-roofed pentice, supported by rustic poles, extends across the entire front elevation. A stone rear lean-to is attached to the right side, with a low single-storey stone wing extending from it to the rear, overlooking The Quarries. A small, multipane shop window, designed to accommodate shutters or a shelf and featuring a shallow wooden cornice, is located towards the front of the right gable end. A rear door is also present in the right gable. A plaque beneath the central stack is inscribed with the words “With INDUSTRY, ECONOMY, HONESTY, CIVILITY and CLEANLINESS a poor man may be Happy and Respectable. 1827”. The interior was not inspected.
