Description
Nos 96, 97, and 98 on West Street are shops with accommodation above, and they were derelict at the time of the survey. These buildings date from around 1830 and are designed in a Classical style. They are constructed of stock brick in Flemish bond, with number 96 being painted, and feature cement details. The roof is concealed by a parapet. The buildings rise three storeys and have six windows, with 12-pane sash windows set in reveals and adorned with rubbed brick voussoirs.
The parapet is ramped up in the center, resembling a pediment, and includes a moulded cornice with a large bracket on the left side, though the corresponding bracket on the right side is missing. There are double bracelets under the pediment, and a cement band runs beneath the cornice and above the first-floor window. Number 96 features a late 19th-century shopfront with tiled pilasters and brackets that have scrolled capitals. Number 97 has a later 19th-century shopfront that retains earlier brackets. Number 98 showcases a 19th-century shopfront with brackets and a modillion eaves cornice. The right rear entry still has the original six flush panelled door. The rear elevation displays gables and 12-pane cambered sashes.
