Description
The Cemetery Gate and Lodges, built around 1838 and designed by architect Amon Henry Wilds, are notable structures located on the south side of Old Road West. The buildings are stuccoed and feature a high round-headed carriage archway that is flanked by twin free-standing Doric columns set on plinths, with a panel between them and a pediment over the arch. Each side of the gate has a two-storey lodge with one window, which is framed by twin engaged columns on their outer sides. The windows are designed to taper outward towards the base and have moulded architrave surrounds. The south lodge includes an additional ground floor window bay beyond the columns, with a roof that slopes up to the main building. On either side of the gate, there are low curved stuccoed walls that have five square pillars and spear railings. The Cemetery Gate, Lodges, and Mortuary Chapel are recognized for their group value.
