Description
The Mausoleum at Cobham Hall was designed by James Wyatt in 1783 for the 4th Earl of Darnley. It was never used and is constructed from Portland stone. The building has a square shape with projecting chamfered corners and is topped by a pyramid. It features Roman Doric order fluted columns in antis on the front and prostyle on the angles, with lunette openings above the cornice and tomb chests above the angle architraves. Inside, there is a circular chapel accessed by several steps, featuring a red marble Corinthian order and a coffered dome made of plaster. Below, the basement contains 32 coffin shelves under a shallow stone dome.
The condition of the mausoleum is poor, having been disrupted by vegetation and vandalism. The iron railings surrounding the southern area have been removed.
