Description

Lime Tree Cottage is a late 18th-century house located on the east side of Canterbury Road in Swingfield. The house is constructed of red and grey brick in Flemish bond, with a plain tile roof. A flint plinth runs along the base, topped with a brick course. A section to the right of the stack was rebuilt using darker brick in stretcher bond. The eaves feature a dentilled brick cornice. The roof is hipped, with a brick ridge stack situated towards the right end. The windows are a mix of four small, leaded two-light casements, three to the left and one to the right of the stack. Segmental heads indicate that the ground-floor windows were originally slightly smaller than they are now. A blocked doorway is located within a brick porch with a hipped plain tile roof, situated under the second first-floor window from the left. A later rear return wing, built of darker brick, extends to the right, along with a more recent lean-to at the rear on the left. Internally, a fireplace features a high cambered head and iron soffit. A bread oven with an iron door is also present, alongside a chamfered cross beam. A flint rear wall exists at the rear of the house.
