Description

Ye Old Thatch is a farmhouse dating from the mid-17th century, possibly with earlier origins, and has alterations from the 18th century or early 19th century. The ground floor of the front elevation is made of painted brick, while the first floor is timber framed and rendered. The right gable end is weatherboarded, and the building features a thatched roof. It has three timber-framed bays that are built at an angle to the road and stands two storeys high on a rendered plinth. The roof is hipped, with a brick ridge stack towards the left end of the left bay and a projecting rendered stack at the right gable end. The fenestration is irregular, consisting of three three-light leaded casements. The ground floor includes an iron diamond mullion window to the left and two three-light leaded casements. There is a boarded door in a thatched porch supported by two posts under the stack, and a ribbed door towards the right end. A Sun Insurance plaque is also present.

Inside, the left gable end features a stud with curved tension braces on the ground floor. There is a chamfered axial beam that is morticed for a partition in the left end bay, and a cross beam a few feet to the right of the stack that is morticed for two studs and a partition. The central bay has a chamfered axial beam with a jewel stop. The right end bay is ceiled, and the first-floor framing consists of relatively small scantling with straight tension braces. There is a brick fireplace in English bond on the right side of the stack, with a bressumer that is chamfered and carved with the date 1661.
