Description
Martello Tower No 2 is a Grade II listed building located on Wear Bay Road, built in 1806 as a defensive structure against a potential Napoleonic invasion, designed by Colonel Twiss and Captain Ford. This circular tower features brick walls that are rendered and tapers inwards as it rises, culminating in a flat roof. The original first-floor door on the southwest side has been converted into a window, while the entrance is now located at the ground floor on the east side. There are two original first-floor openings on the southwest, close to the original doorway, which have had 20th-century windows inserted. Additionally, four other closely spaced windows are present on this side of the tower. Inside, the tower retains a central brick pier and brick vaulting on both the first and ground floors, with a magazine located on the east side at ground level. An original corbel for the floors is visible at the first-floor level. This tower is one of three Martello towers on Wear Bay Road, which together form the easternmost part of the series in this area of Kent.
