Description

The Dining Hall and Tower, built in 1909 by Sir Henry Tanner, is located at the Duke of York's Royal Military School in Guston. The building features a pebbledashed exterior with red brick dressings and a plain tiled roof. It is a single-storey structure with nine bays, complemented by a tower and low kitchen wings to the north.

The main elevation showcases a plinth, buttresses, and pilaster strip quoins, along with a wooden modillion eaves cornice that supports two lead cupola air vents. Three large open pedimented projections extend above the eaves, featuring keyed and gauged semi-circular mullioned and transomed windows. The central window has an apron below, while the flanking windows include double half-glazed doors with corner hoods. Six additional mullioned windows are positioned high up to the eaves.

The return elevations are marked by large semi-circular headed windows, with the eaves cornice raised above them and half-glazed doors below. The tall battered tower has clock faces on each side at the top, along with a curving iron balcony, modillion eaves cornice, lead cupola, and flagstaff. The single-storey kitchen and service wings are located to the north and east.

Inside, the hall features a nine-bay barrel vault with prominent transverse ribs and a modillion eaves cornice. The lower walls are panelled, with original seats and benches, as well as four large iron corona lucis fixtures.
