Description
Block number 14 is a gymnasium and swimming pool built in 1909 by Sir Henry Tanner. The building features a pebbledashed exterior with red brick dressings and a plain tiled roof. The main block is designed to resemble a Roman basilica, with buttressed sides and a modillion eaves cornice on a half-hipped roof that includes a range of corner lights along its entire length. Above the entrance narthex or porch, there are gauged Diocletian windows in the gable, flanked by circular windows on either side of half-glazed doors that have semi-circular fanlights and segmented pediments. The side elevations also display rows of Diocletian windows. The connecting block has glazing bar sashes on either side of half-glazed doors topped with a flat cornice hood. The interior was in the process of restoration at the time of the survey.
