Description

The Chapel, also known as Block Number 47, is a building constructed in 1909 by Sir Henry Tanner. It features a combination of pebble dash, red brick, and ashlar dressings, topped with a plain tiled roof. The layout includes a chancel, a nave with aisles and transepts, and an eastern narthex flanked by towers. The building is oriented to the west.

The entrance front, located on the east side, has recessed semi-circular windows on either side of an ashlar doorway, which is framed by a keyed semi-circular surround. Above the door is a modillion cornice with a pediment, and a large, keyed semi-circular gabled window. The side towers are octagonal, battlemented, and topped with cupolas. There are shallow segmentally headed clerestory lights, three on each side, along with plain mullioned sidelights. The transepts feature buttresses and Diocletian windows above board doors set in raised brick surrounds. A triple lancet window on the west side is the only element that suggests Gothic or ecclesiastical style.

The chancel has a shingled bellcote tower with a cupola and pedimented louvred openings. Inside, the walls are banded with brick and ashlar, and there are narrow side aisles. The nave has roof trusses, while the chancel features a plaster barrel vault. The original pews and fittings are still present.
