Description

The Polton Stone is a stone marking the site of St. Mary's Church in Polton, dating from the 18th century. It stands about 2 feet high and has a rounded head. The stone features a simple inscription that reads: "Here did Stand the Parish Church of Polton IX," which is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The last two lines of the inscription are now illegible, but they have been recorded elsewhere as referring to the church as part of Chenth in the Hundred of Bewsborough. The church continued to receive bequests in 1533 and had a curacy in 1563.
