Description
Southdown Cottage is a house dating from the 13th century. It features a timber frame with large panels and plaster infill, topped with a thatched roof. The building has a hall house plan and consists of one storey and an attic, set on a plinth made of flint. The roof is hipped, with a central stack and a raking dormer on the right end. On the ground floor, there are four wooden casement windows and a central 4-light mullioned window, along with a boarded door. To the right, there is a weatherboarded outshot. The left end bay appears to be a later addition, but it is fully framed at the rear, suggesting some earlier structural features. Inside, there is evidence of an early hall house, including a 12-foot square hall and a trussed rafter roof.
