Description
The Church of St Martin is a parish church located in Great Mongeham. It has origins dating back to the 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries, with significant restoration carried out by William Butterfield in 1851. The church is constructed from flint, featuring stone quoins and dressings, and has plain tiled roofs. The layout includes a nave with north and south aisles and a clerestorey, a chancel with chapels, and a west tower. The west tower is four stages high in the Perpendicular style, complete with buttresses and a crenellated parapet. A Norman window in the west half of the north chapel indicates the church's early origins, while the aisled nave and chancel with chapels are early 13th century, restored around 1851, with the south aisle rebuilt by Butterfield. The clerestorey of the nave is from the 14th century. The north porch has a tiled roof, and there are some pre-Butterfield lancets in the south chapel, along with traceried windows and some double lancets. The chancel and north chapel feature east windows from 1861.
Inside, the church has three bay arcades supported by rectangular piers and pointed arches that are slightly chamfered. The restored crown post roof includes panels with quatrefoil carving. There is a Perpendicular tower screen, a 13th-century piscina, and two sedilia. A Jacobean wall monument commemorates Edward Crayford Esq, who died in 1615. The pulpit, likely designed by Butterfield, dates from 1851, and the furnishings in the chancel are also attributed to him.
