Description
The Head Post Office, built in the late 19th century, was designed by architect C. B. Hutchinson. The right side of the building features two storeys and showcases an elaborate Dutch gable made of red brick, adorned with stone and flint diaperwork. At the top, there is a curved pediment. The gable is supported by four moulded brick pilasters and three round-headed arches, with a wide modillion cornice below. The first floor includes six moulded brick pilasters and casement windows with mullions and transoms set within arcading. The ground floor has two large cambered windows and a doorcase on the right side, which features a blank cartouche above, topped with a stone curved pediment and flanked by console brackets, all framed within a freely interpreted Gibbs surround. To the left, there is a one-storey section with a slate roof, featuring two stuccoed gables with curved pediments and console brackets, and a modillion cornice below. The ground floor of this section has thirteen moulded brick pilasters, but only six windows set in arcading, with the remaining window spaces left blank. The building is finished with a stone and brick plinth.
