Description
9 Church Street in Saint Clements is a house that retains at least one bay of an early to mid 17th century structure, which was refronted in the early 19th century. The building is timber-framed and has a brown brick façade in Flemish bond on the south side, while the north side features brick with pebbledash above. The roof is peg-tiled, hipped to the east and gabled to the west, where it adjoins number 11, with a gable to the north and a brick chimney stack that has been renewed above ridge level. The house is two storeys tall, with one window on the front and two at the rear.
The layout retains at least one bay of a timber-framed building heated on each floor, with a parlour below and a chamber above, likely of lobby entrance type, but it was converted into a two-up two-down terrace house in the early 19th century. The south front features one window on each floor, a twelve-pane sash with horns set in moulded architraves, and a cambered head above the ground floor window. The early 19th century doorcase has a flat wooden hood, panelled reveals, a reeded architrave with corner paterae, and a six-panelled door. The north or rear elevation has a large gable with two casement windows on the first floor.
Inside, the downstairs front room displays a timber-framed wall with closely spaced upright posts and the base of the wallplate visible, along with an open fireplace featuring 17th century brickwork and a chamfered wooden bressumer. There is also a panelled door with plank and muntin panelling. The rear downstairs room, or kitchen, has an early 19th century wooden fireplace and a late 19th century built-in wooden dresser. The upstairs front room contains a 17th century brick chimney breast with a wooden bressumer and a section of a spine beam from which the floor joists have been removed. This house is significant as it retains elements of an early to mid 17th century timber-framed building that was refronted in brickwork in the early 19th century and is part of a group of listed buildings.
