Description
The 60th Rifles Memorial to the Indian Mutiny is a Grade II listed structure made of granite, featuring bronze decorations. It consists of a tapering square granite pier that stands on a deep moulded plinth and base. At the top, a moulded cornice supports a pyramidal cap. Below the cornice, bronze swags display medals from previous battle honours, while the front face features a bronze trophy with a lion's head mask. An inscription reads, "IN MEMORY OF COMRADES WHO FELL DURING THE INDIAN CAMPAIGNS OF 1857, 1858 AND 1859. ERECTED BY THE 1ST BATTALION OF ROYAL RIFLES AUGUST 1861." The sides and rear of the memorial list the battle honours: OUDE, DELHI, and ROHILCUND. The regimental motto, "CELER ET AUDAX," is inscribed on the rear face.
The memorial is positioned on two square steps with rusticated tops, enclosed by a low circular wall that originally included iron railings.
