Description
The ice house located in the grounds of Clock House, approximately 150 meters to the south-west of the house, dates from around 1812. Access is through a door set in a stone facade, which features the initials TE and the date 1812, referencing Thomas Edmeades, a former owner of Clock House. Inside, a staircase descends 17 feet and turns into a passageway. On the right side, a doorway opens at a high level into an ice storing well. To the left, the passage continues to a cold storage chamber. A second staircase, located beneath the entrance staircase, leads to the floor of the ice well, which has a diameter of 14 feet and is constructed of brick. The upper portion of the well is domed and includes a shaft that extends to the surface. The cold storage chamber was used for storing game and meat, with a floor paved in bricks and lime-washed rendered walls. There are 38 slots in the walls that supported a circular shelf, and higher up, additional slots and heavy iron rails were likely used for suspending game and meat.
