Description
The Hales Place Jesuit Cemetery Chapel is likely a garden building from the late 18th century to early 19th century that was adapted around 1884 to serve as the Mortuary Chapel for the Jesuit College of St Mary. The college was established by a group of French Jesuits who took over Hales Place. This roughly circular building measures about 9 feet in diameter and features a porch. It is constructed from flint with red brick strips, bonded with stone courses and blocks of animal knucklebones. The porch has a pediment, quoined corners, and a round-headed arch topped with a cross made of animal bones. The chapel has a slate roof with a lantern and a cross on top. Inside, the walls are covered with blue plaster that has gold decoration. There is a marble altar dated 1875 and a funeral brass commemorating Sir Edward Hales, 5th Baronet, who died in 1802, depicted in medieval costume. This brass was previously located in the chapel that was attached to Hales Place, which has since been demolished. The building holds curiosity value and historical interest due to its connection with the Hales family and the French Jesuits.
