Description
37 Burgate is a building that appears to be from the 18th century but is part of a 15th-century timber-framed house. It has three storeys and attics, with a painted brick exterior and an old tiled roof featuring two hipped dormers. The second floor includes two 19th-century sash windows. The first floor has an overhang and boasts two elegant 18th-century two-light bow windows, each adorned with wooden cornices supported by brackets and decorated with alternating triglyph and paterae friezes. The ground floor features an 18th-century shopfront with fluted pilasters and a moulded frieze. The rear elevation is tile-hung, and there is a 19th-century one-storey extension made of buff brick, which has a crenellated design and a round-headed doorcase with a semi-circular fanlight and a fielded panelled door. Nos 23 to 37 Burgate and the Christchurch Gateway are part of a group of buildings.
