Description
Christchurch Gateway is the entrance to the Cathedral Precincts, built in 1517 and restored by Caröe in the 1930s. This Grade I listed building is three storeys high and constructed from ragstone and artificial stone. It has a square shape with octagonal turrets. The ground floor features a Lierne-vaulted room accessed through a wide four-centred arch and a foot arch. There are rooms on the two upper storeys above the vault. The lower floor displays bands of shields within quatrefoils, while the upper floor showcases half-length angels carrying shields. These heraldic shields commemorate Prince Arthur, the eldest son of Henry VII, who died in 1502. The wooden doors date from the 17th century. Nos 23 to 37 (consecutive) and the Christchurch Gateway form a group.
