Description
Walpole House, part of King's School, is a late 18th-century building located at 48 Palace Street. It is three storeys tall with a semi-basement, constructed of red brick. The building features a parapet with stone coping and a stuccoed stringcourse. The northernmost window bay is recessed and has arcading over the first-floor windows. Access is via a doorway that is reached by five steps, with handrails on either side. There are narrow windows flanking the door, which has a segmental fanlight, a reeded frieze, and six-panel moulded double doors, along with a footscraper.
The rear elevation includes a medieval section, which serves as the porch to the original Archbishop's Palace. This part is two storeys high and built of flint and ashlar, featuring buttresses and sash windows. There is a blocked arch, while the rest of the building has a curved bay and three sash windows. The doorcase includes a rectangular fanlight and steps with wrought iron railings. Walpole House is part of a group that includes Nos 29 to 48 Palace Street.
