Description

The Deanery is a large, long building that has evolved over several periods and was originally the Prior's Guest House. At the southern end, there is a 15th-century tower with four storeys, constructed from flint and topped with a castellated parapet. Adjacent to this is a section from the 16th century, which originally featured sash windows that were later inserted. This part was damaged by bombing and subsequently rebuilt to match its original appearance. It has two storeys made of flint and brick, with three gables; the centre gable has a second-floor window that is a bay of five lights, while the northernmost window is round-headed. To the north, there is another 15th-century section that includes a parapet and a buttress. The Cathedral Appeal Fund office, numbered 21, has two storeys and three windows. Its facade is primarily from the 19th century but includes a medieval four-centred stone arch. The building is constructed of flints with red brick dressings and quoins, and the glazing bars are intact. The Deanery and the Cathedral Appeal Fund office are part of a group that includes Nos 20 to 29A, Pilgrim's or Pentise entry attached to No 29, a wall in the garden of No 29, a wall and gatepiers between Nos 28 and 29, a gateway from Green Court, and the adjoining building, King's School Library and Norman Staircase.
