Description

Bourne Park House, originally called Bourne Place, was built in 1701 by Sir Anthony and Dame Elizabeth Aucher on the site of an earlier building owned by the Bourne family. This large rectangular mansion features two storeys, an attic, and a basement, constructed of red brick with a hipped tile roof and a wooden modillion eaves cornice. The entrance front has thirteen windows and six dormers, with the central portion of five windows slightly projecting and topped by a pediment that contains a Venetian attic window. The windows have stone keystones and are hung sashes with glazing bars. There is a stone stringcourse and rusticated quoins on each of the three sections. Each wing has three dormers, each with pediments; the center dormer of each group has a segmental pediment, while the outer ones have triangular pediments. The central doorway is flanked by fluted Ionic pilasters and features a curved pediment with a cartouche above an eight-panel door, all accessed by eight steps bordered by a stone wall that continues in brick in front of the basement forecourt, which is interspersed with stone piers. The west or garden front is similar but lacks the basement forecourt and central doorway, featuring only five dormers, all with triangular pediments. The north and south fronts each have four windows, with the north front also having a small porch. Although the interior was altered in 1848, it retains a fine 18th-century staircase, along with panelling and ceilings.
