Description

This is a cemetery memorial dating from around 1924, erected to commemorate the novelist Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) and other members of his family. The memorial consists of a square stone enclosure with low, slightly battered walls. At its centre stands a roughly hewn monolith with a diagonal top and an inscription reading "JOSEPH TEADOR CONRAD KORZENIOWSKI BORN DECEMBER 3RD 1857 DIED AUGUST 3RD 1924," alongside a quotation from Spencer: "ELEGY AFTER TOYLE, PORT AFTER STORMY SEAS, EASE AFTER WARRE, DEATH AFTER LIFE DOES GREATLY PLEASE." An inscription to his wife, Jessie Emmeline Conrad Korzenoiwska, is located below. The memorial area is covered in stone chippings and includes three stone slabs and a central stone vase. It is listed as a funerary memorial of a writer of international importance, reflecting his group value.
